Laura Jo Pierce’s early abstract forms took the shape of organic color fields in watercolor and oil pastel. Over time, long strings of words emerged from behind these washes of color. Sometimes diaristic (“This morning Mom woke up about 6:00”) and sometimes musing (“Fences look lovely flower and weeds to [sic]”), her later and most recognized work used writing as a fundamental aesthetic element. Pierce’s work in is the permanent collection of the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
