Juan Aguilera - Viewing Room

Juan Aguilera was born in Guanajuato, Mexico in 1966. He lived there until immigrating to California around the age of eleven. Juan joined the Creative Growth Studio in 1988, and embarked upon a long career, developing a deeply personal and expressive style that reflects his veneration of the divine feminine.

Juan calls upon a canon of symbols and media to create artwork that is reminiscent of retablos - devotional paintings in Mexican folk art. For Juan, the significance of his imagery is similarly reverential, yet he chooses to replace traditional Catholic iconography with women’s underwear and nude female bodies. The feminine, to Juan, is of the utmost divinity and represents qualities that he greatly admires - ornamentation and freedom.
